[August 1] [Avatar: The Last Airbender] Pretend
Title: Pretend
Day/Theme: August 1/come up through the summer rain
Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Character/Pairing: Katara/Yue
Rating: G
Word Count: 410
Yue and Katara sat in a small icy room in the back of the Northern Water Tribe's palace.
"I envy you," Yue said to her. "I've never left the ice, and I never will."
"You don't know that," said Katara, taking her hand. "You have your whole life ahead of you. I didn't really think I'd ever leave the Southern Water Tribe either."
"I don't mean to offend you, Katara, but my life isn't like yours. I mean, even if I weren't a princess it would all be different. I'm engaged to be married already, and the women of our people stay in the home."
Katara felt a small pang at hearing that Yue was engaged. She knew the women of of the Northern Water Tribe married at young ages, but she hadn't know that about Yue. Could it be that she was jealous that the princess had someone else? But she had nothing to offer Yue.
Yue squeezed Katara's hand, and Katara brushed a few threads of silver hair back from the girl's face.
"If I could, I would take you on a trip," she said impulsively.
"What's it like, out where it's green?" Yue asked. "I've seen small gardens here, but never a field of wildflowers or anything like that."
"It's beautiful," Katara answered. "I mean, I'm a Water Tribe girl and I'll always think the ice and snow is beautiful too. But when the sun shines on the grass, it's so alive. There are colors everywhere, the blue of the sky and the red and pink and purple of the flowers."
Yue took both Katara's hands in hers. "And it's warm?"
Katara nodded. "Yes. When you can feel the sun on your skin it's almost like a warm bath. And even when it rains it's still warm."
The princess shivered. "When it rains here it's so cold it only makes more ice."
With a small smile, Katara waved a hand in the air. A small drizzling rain began to fall over them, right there in the palace.
"You'll have to pretend it's sunny," said Katara apologetically, looking at the small torch that lit the room.
"And I'll pretend it's green, too," Yue replied, closing her eyes. "Thank you, Katara."
She looked so pretty there, with her eyes closed, imagining the summer, that Katara couldn't resist kissing her gently on the lips.
"I'll show you someday," she said again.
Yue only nodded, and didn't even open her eyes.
