[July 31][Original] No More Secrets
Title: No More Secrets
Day/Theme: July 31, 2009 "I need you so much closer"
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Bashir, Saselia
Rating: PG
That's it! Every day for July, all related to the same story! (It seems like lots of other people were productive this month too!)
"You're a spy?"
"No," he frowned, "Well, maybe sort of a Silesian spy. But don't be scared," his voice grew soft as he hurried to out himself and then reassure Saselia all in one breath before she ran away, "I'm an inquisitor- but I'm just an investigator, Saselia! I was just appointed to the position the day before I met you."
Saselia allowed her raised foot to fall back to the ground, but she didn't turn or run. She believed Bashir. What reason did he have to lie? All these weeks he had been so sweet and sincere....maybe he could be an inquisitor, but something worse- there was just no way. Though even an inquisitor was hard to believe. She tried to reason it out, asking herself, "What do I know about inquisitors anyway?" Maybe all of them were like him. It would certainly explain their ability to do their work unnoticed. "So...that man you keep reporting to is your boss?" she ventured a guess. Now that older, serious man, him she could imagine as an inquisitor.
Bashir took a deep breath. No more secrets. If he was willing to reveal that much to her, he had to be willing to reveal it all. (He was already in over his head anyway.) "I'm making reports to him, but he's my subordinate." She looked at him strangely and he tried to use words to compensate for the awkward feeling. "I know, strange, isn't it?"
"You're important then."
He rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on. "Nominally, I suppose. But honestly, Saselia, could I really be worth that much to them if they sent me off on a mission like this?"
"Does Uncle Simcha know? Does Mr. Fado?"
"I didn't tell either of them. I'm only telling you." He could only hope that she saw what this meant to him. He wasn't supposed to be telling anyone. In Teleri's eyes it probably would've been better for him to lie or to let her believe what she wanted. But he was telling her anyway because he couldn't bear to lie to her. These secrets had made him feel an invisible barrier between himself and these others and all he really wanted was for them to become closer.
