[July 30][Original] I Need It Like I Need A Millstone Around My Neck
Title: I Need It Like I Need A Millstone Around My Neck
Day/Theme: July 30, 2009 "for I have made her prison be her every step away from me"
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Ofika, Tiokihawa, Bashir
Rating: PG
When Ofika left her father's palace, which she did only quite infrequently, she went in style. Bashir didn't have the means (or probably the sense) to make his pilgrimage like this, but since she was so aware of his situation Ofika had made certain to bring along some things he might've missed. Bashir would be so glad to see her! He had been acting so strangely for a while and then he had suddenly disappeared from her uncle's palace. Then Mama Sola had said he was on a pilgrimage to Oxa so she had made up her mind to follow him. Her father was always saying so many nice things about going on pilgrimages- how good they were for your soul and how many wonderful experiences you would have traveling with like-minded people- it made her wonder why she had never given serious thought to making one before. ...And why hadn't Father gone, for that matter?
It had been hard to leave her father. Even if she wasn't treated as an official member of the royal family, Father still loved her and they spent lots of time together in the tower sharing tea and cakes, or having their hair fixed, or attending religious services. He didn't usually let her go out and when he did, she usually still felt a subtle pressure to come back soon or not to let herself stand out too much. Father was always so worried that something would happen to her that he made Ofika worry that something would happen to herself too and she got nervous and rushed back to his side. They were like a pair of dolls that were never meant to leave their dollhouse. Nothing good awaited them outside. They could only get lost or dirty or stolen.
But Bashir, who had always seemed to be a permanent part of her uncle's palace, also held a sort of magnetic drawn over her, and now he had flown outside of the aviary to experience the wider world for some sort of reason Ofika couldn't be sure of. And without Bashir, she was getting lonely. Father was fickle, but Bashir was constant. He was kind and funny because he was so ridiculously awkward. She felt as though the two were pulling her in different directions, which muddled her ability to decide, but ultimately she chose to go. Father was dreaming of things from the past and his fantasies didn't include her. But Bashir- Ofika could be sure she wasn't far from Bashir's mind. She looked at the window of her palanquin at the drably dressed pilgrims passing by. It couldn't be long now. Sooner or later, Bashir would show.
