He suspected she missed him as acutely as he did her, and this knowledge occasionally struck him with guilt and remorse. Their child would have been born by now; knowing her, he could see how she would be torn between looking after the baby and searching for him. It would have been easier if he had died - and yet death was nothing but a back door for the spineless; for those who could not bear that their happiness was built from pieces that had been sewn back together again, rather than something round and clean. Sometimes happiness also had its jagged edges, that was all, and most of those came from gathering the pieces.
