She is running, hurtling down Bright Peak, and later this memory will always be tainted with another one, that of a grippingly cold water, so cold she can feel slivers of ice forming underneath her fingernails. (Better an icy lake than a funeral pyre for her living flesh, better that than utter contempt and perhaps disappointed glances) She is running so fast that she has no time to stop and notice if there is anyone waiting at the foot of the mountain, ready to grab her hand, either to lead her to obscurity or to the flames she is now committed to. And when a man comes within sight, face turned up to her, she has never felt less like stopping in her entire life: surely, as he should weigh no more than a hairpin, she can fold him up in one palm and fly onward, without pause, leaving this curious sense of loss behind her.
