[July 22][Original] Restfeast
Title: Restfeast
Day/Theme: July 22, 2009 "words without thoughts never to heaven go"
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Fado, Simcha, Bashir, Saselia
Rating: G
"What day is today? Is it Restfeast already?" Bashir was surprised to think he might've lost track of time while on this pilgrimage, but the abundance of yellow and white banners flying outside farmers' home and over the nearby town certainly indicated that the Restfeast austerities (to be followed the next day by the Restfeast festivities) were under way.
"Oh, and Fado let us eat breakfast!" Saselia groaned, "That's the absolute worst time to eat your one meal of the day! Now I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight!"
Simcha felt even worse than his niece concerning the matter of fasting and he scowled at Fado. "Now I see why you didn't eat! What'd you have to do that for?! You want to make me cranky all day?"
"I thought it would be good for you. I haven't seen you praying much these days. Spend your time focusing on the One."
"Easy for him to say," Simcha muttered, sneering at the brown road beneath his feet, "He still gets to eat."
Traveling wasn't about to get their minds off their stomachs, even though pilgrims were granted a special exemption from the travel limits imposed on feast days. Setting up camp on the early side wasn't going to help either, since then they'd have nothing to do but think about their state and, well, pray and meditate on the meaning of the day. Somehow Bashir didn't that idea would go over well with Simcha and Saselia, increasing the chances of approval for his new plan. "Why don't we take a break and go into town?" he proposed cheerfully, "We can listen in on the ceremonies and then tomorrow we'll see what kind of festivities they throw there."
"Sounds great to me," Saselia eagerly agreed.
"Oh, definitely," Simcha chimed in, casting his earlier displeasure aside quickly at the thought of a good time ahead. "That must be Alzhantan. I bet I can find some buyers there too." He sidled up to Fado, looking not the least bit repentant, but only his usual squirrelly self. "So, whaddya say, Fadoka?" he appealed to their de facto leader with an over the top expression of raised eyebrows and grinning, off-white teeth.
Not one to hold grudges, Fado fixed his friend with a hard look for just a few seconds before tossing it away to show he was only teasing. Simcha burst out laughing at how completely he had been taken in by this joking. "Of course we can, Simka! I like the sound of that. Maybe it'll give me the chance to see you really get religious."
"I'll pray that we'll always be friends," the peddler declared firmly, "That's something I can say and really mean!"
