Series: Original

"Bashir, if I let you go back into the capital, will we ever see you again?" Saselia asked, breathless, grasping toward the edge of his wide sleeve only for it to slide just out of her reach.

He looked back over his shoulder and where their had been determination his friends now saw only trepidation. "I..." he fumbled with his thoughts, spilling them haphazardly into awkward words, "You will. I promise you, all of you. I'm going to the court of the older emperor, and wherever else I need to go, but I am coming back. I'm supposed to be my own boss, aren't I? Well, my pilgrimage isn't finished. I've been to Oxa, but I still have so much more to see. ...And to say... And to learn."

Saselia felt her heart flutter, then tighten. He sounded so brave. She had never realized that among all his scattered thoughts he could pull together a speech, even a small one, that showed the true depths of his bravery.

Bashir would've protested against the idea of himself as courageous in the least had he been aware of her new perception, but he was too busy engaging in yet another internal exercise in futility, telling himself that what he said was the truth as he believed it would come to be and not just some vague reassurance to a friend. Fado could see the struggle in him and took heart in the fact that even this miniscule bit of strength was so much more than Bashir had carried when he first walked out of the western gate.

Simcha grinned and waved him away in mock disgust, "Go on, get out of here, kiddo. We don't need you anymore."

Bashir surprised even himself by smiling then. Saselia's barely hidden agony at his departure was making this parting hard for him. Simcha's flippant words were exactly what he needed to send himself off with a little lightness in his step. "I'm going," he announced, because he couldn't say "goodbye."

Saselia bit her lip to keep from calling after him and breaking his resolve again. Simcha put his hand on his niece's trembling shoulder. He understood.
