“The sun’s too lucky, that fucking bastard.”
It was Gojyo who spoke, the first human voice to intrude on the steady thrumming of the engine, the semi-solid wall of the whipping air being displaced by the jeep, for a few hours now. He was sprawled at the back in his usual place, beside the still snoring Goku, gazing at the sky directly above him. Already, daylight touched the star-studded immensity in its fringes, corrupting the dark blue with an impotent sort of purple he despised. Behind him, a line of pukey vermillion stretched out as far as he could see.
From up front, in his usual place behind the wheel, Hakkai spoke up.
“The sun’s lucky, Gojyo?” he asked a bit flippantly. “I think it’s nice it gets to climb up there every morning and look at the world from one end to another. I’ve never pinned you as a spectator-type, though.”
“Heh. Gotta be boring staring at miserable creatures like us crawling on this shitty planet for a whole day. I mean the sun’s path. Rises in the east, sets in the west.”
“Regular like clockwork.”
“Yeah, and it doesn’t get stuck. Doesn’t get distracted. Doesn’t need grub, or food, or sex. Any of that shit.”
“Very profound thoughts so early in the morning,” murmured the other. “The sun’s well-worn path does off-set our experiences so far, doesn’t it?”
Gojyo brought the cigarette to his lips and inhaled long. “Do you really feel like we know where we’re going? Seems pretty fucked up to me.”
“Ah.” Hakkai paused. “You seem lost. Perhaps, sacerdotal intervention would be appropriate?”
“Look behind you,” the priest spoke up dourly.
“What’s there?” Gojyo demanded.
“The sun, you moron!”
“The wisdom of his Holiness,” quipped Hakkai. “I thought you were asleep.”
“Was. How can anybody sleep with all this yammering?”
Sanzo fished for a cigarette from the within the folds of his vestment. “Light,” he ordered, turning slightly behind him. Gojyo swore at him, but did as he was told. The emaciated priest took a few moments to enjoy his tobacco—as much as a man like him could enjoy, well, anything—sucking the smoldering fire nearly halfway up the stick. Ash and smoke easily disintegrated against the rushing wind.
“You should have noticed that about life in general,” he said suddenly.
Gojyo sat up and flicked the butt to the churning sand scattering at the wheels’ wake. “Notice what?”
“The general fucked-up-ness of life, I presume?” answered their driver gaily. “You agree, Gojyo.”
“Heh.”
The half-demon stretched back, lit another cigarette and continued to stare at the growing morning.
