"Why a dragon, of all things?" Yoshimori muttered, then answered himself, "Because it's Mother, of course. She's just the kind of person to draw attention to herself. In a way, it's probably a good thing she's not living with us."

Tokine watched him for a moment, concern struggling with resignation. She suspected he was going to try to sleep his worries away in class today, only to discover that the method had its own flaws, intensified headaches not the least of them. "A good thing for you, you mean? I don't think your grandfather or Toshimori-kun would be much fazed."

"Father would be."

She was about to say that his father was a grown man, then stopped. She knew a lot of things about his family, which was different from understanding them inside out. "I don't suppose your mother is coming back soon, not after last night."

He hung his head, looking long-suffering rather than pleased. "I suppose so, too."

"Yes." There was no need to tell him to cheer up - it was something he ought to decide on his own. The day was still young, and the solutions he tended to eventually figure out for himself would sustain him well into the busy night. She knew him, which might be a comfort to him, except perhaps not at this very moment.
