[Sept. 13] [Naruto] [Go West]
Title: Night and Day
Day/Theme: Sept 13/ Go West
Series: Naruto
Character(s): Kurenai and Anko
Rating: G
"Head 5 miles south until you reach the main irrigation source. After you cross it, I'll give you instruction on how to reach the mountain base."
"So... left or right?"
Kurenai frowned into her receiver. Since Anko couldn't see that, she put extra effort into sounding irritated. "You're an elite ninja and you can't tell from where you are which way south is?"
"The trees aren't exactly growing compasses."
"You should be able to tell without one."
"Look, you're the one who insisted on keeping the map to yourself, so this is hardly the time to criticize--"
"Left Anko. Turn left. And by the way, 'main irrigation source' means 'river'."
"See Red? Now wasn't that easier?"
"No, not really," she replied, just to be difficult.
Sometimes Kurenai wondered why she kept such close kinship to Anko. They were as different as night and day; Kurenai silent and elusive like the moon while Anko paraded brightly for all the world. There were ties in their past that did bind them, but even after such things comrades can slowly dift apart, find their own pathes, and travel their separate destinies. But somehow, Kurenai could never quite bring herself to stray far from Anko for reasons even she forgot how to explain.
"After you've crossed the river, turn right and keep running until you reach the top of a hill overlooking a big cliff in the ground."
"So go west for 2.8 miles until I reach the canyon just beyond the molehills, huh?"
There was a moment of dead air between them that even Kurenai could hear the snark of Anko's smile, and it was only with Anko that she would ever drop her composure enough to reply with full honesty.
"You suck." Laughter filled the air waves.
And then there were times Kurenai remembered that the moon depended upon the sun to shine.

Authoress Notes
Anko and Kurenai, the two characters I love playing as best buds while at times still thinking, "How did THAT happen?" Actually, I've already dreamed up a plot of how it did happen, but it's too long to be told in a drabble. Maybe a series of drabbles, but... We'll see where future themes take my imagination.
What I like about the idea of their friendship however, is the balance they give to one another. Rather than similarities bonding them, it's opposites--my theory is that they each see something they'd like to be in each other. Anko sees good sense and stability, while Kurenai sees confidence and freedom--however, both are too rooted in their own personalities to mimic the other to such an extent. But hanging around together puts them in a comfort zone that they'd have a hard time sharing with too many other people.
If Kurenai seemed OOC at the end there, forgive me, but at the same time, I kinda meant to do that. Again speaking on the comfort levels they'd have with one another, Anko wouldn't be the type to hold Kurenai to expectations. If Kurenai could be totally honest, rude, casual with only a small handful of people, Anko would be one of them.
Again, all in my opinion anyway. Hope you enjoyed.
