“Teach me to swim,” the girl says, her eyes determined.

“No,” says her older sister, feeling sour- though their other sisters might tell you that that’s hardly unusual for her.

The girl’s eyes narrow. “Teach me,” she demands.

“I said no,” her older sister snaps, and turns away. She’s never really got the hang of being understanding to someone just learning something she’s good at.

“Fine,” the girl says, glaring at her sister like it’d make a difference (and it’s just as well laser eyes are one of the many things that don’t run in the family), and lifts her chin up. “I’ll just have to teach myself, then.”

Her sister thinks of all the things that could grow in the lake behind the house, and turns back to the girl. “Fine,” she says, “but keep in mind I’m just doing this to keep you safe.”

“That’s good enough,” the girl says, looking immensely satisfied.

Her older sister wonders how long she'll stay that way.
