"I wouldn't have traded my life for anything," the shape perched on his back mused. She was probably speaking to him with her mind, as these creatures were supposed to be able to have power over thoughts and visions. "Yes, it has gone on for too long, and I must admit it's not too fruitful. But for the most part it went as I wanted it to. Nothing pleases an old lady like having no regrets."
"You were in pain," he pointed out gently. The last of the light had died away a minute ago. The humans would have made it back to the other side by now. He felt no envy at this realization.
A small, trilling, almost coy laugh. "Oh, tush. I do, however, appreciate your efforts to make me better." She paused. "I appreciate them very much."
"And now you can heal yourself in leisure."
The grip on his shoulders relaxed. "If you ever want to go someplace else..."
"You should have some rest."
In reply, she lay her head against his. He strolled on, every now and then making sure she would not slip off his back. The road ahead was going to have no markers and direction signs. He wanted to know, at least, that he would never start imagining he imagined it.
