After the unknown men vanished within a haze of bottomless pain, he woke up only once. Voices sneaked in and out of his consciousness ("Fresh bandages for Third Uncle - now!", "Sixth Brother, calm down, he might hear you," and, somehow most ominous of all, "I knocked down the potted plant, sorry"), magnified and then corrupted by the surge of blood in his ears. At one point he became convinced that he was hallucinating the whole thing. He was dead, and his spirit was simply too stubborn to leave his brothers and teacher without a final parting word.
Parting.
Without a word.
His breath, struggling feebly to get past his battered windpipe.
("Fifth Brother, which agency did you say - ")
Damning himself for a coward, he summoned the strength to reach out a ferocious, clawed hand, and close it down on those of his brothers.
