[July 5][Original] Metamorphosis
Title: Metamorphosis
Day/Theme: July 5, 2009 "I ran up the door, closed the stairs"
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Ofika, Tiokihawa
Rating: G
"Ofika? Wha-what have you done to your hair?" Blessed Tiokihawa looked aghast at his once long-haired daughter. He knew Ofika was a little strange, but he thought she valued her hair more than that. It was her best feature and she had always delighted in brushing and braiding it, letting her servants pin it up in elaborate styles, and having Lady Sola slide colorful beads onto the strands.
Ofika stopped and nervously turned back to try and face her father. Her thoughts fluttered wildly as she tried to decide what to tell him. Although Saselia had snipped off her hair without asking her, Ofika didn't want to place the blame on her and risk turning her father against her new friend before they even met. It wasn't Saselia's fault that she had gotten her hair full of knots and tangles and ended up accidentally dipping a good portion of it in Osesa's caramel syrup. That seemed like a reasonable angle to take on the miniature disaster. "I...I messed it up. I got it full of sticky stuff that wouldn't come out, so my friend helped me cut it off."
That made him sympathetic rather than angry. "My poor dear," he sighed, "That must've been awful. It must've been so hard for you."
She didn't mind anymore, but he was right. It had been hard. It was the first haircut of this magnitude she had ever received. Her head had felt so light at first that she was almost afraid it would blow right off her shoulders. "I'm fine now, Father." She hoped she sounded reassuring. The younger emperor was a bit excitable and she wasn't sure she had the time to let him get all worked up and try, in his awkward way, to comfort her.
He didn't know exactly what to say to that and so he looked away, running a finger aimlessly along the banister.
"I'm going up to my room," she said quietly, her shoes tapping dancer-like as she hurried up the steps. "Will you tell me if a man named Urbahn comes to court? I need to talk to him."
"Urbahn? He's that scriptural scholar that came to Ile's court a little while back. He's been in and out of the higher court for a few weeks now. If I see him... I'll tell you. I just don't see why you would want to see him." Tiokihawa was more at ease with this conversation than the one before, but he still could not fathom what was in his daughter's mind.
It didn't help that she had changed on the road to Oxa. It was the nature of all people to change one bit at a time, but for many years she had been stagnant- a princess in a tower, in a place were steps were stones and windows were doors.
