[July 2] [Lord of the Rings] Cherries & Sunshine
Title: Cherries & Sunshine
Day/Theme: 2•the limit of a sweet memory
Series:Lord of the Rings
Character/Pairing: Sam and Frodo
Rating: PG
Comments: RotK, in Mordor
What was it Mr. Gandalf told Bilbo all those years ago? If your heart wants lifting, think of pleasant things.
“It’ll be cherry picking time back home,” Sam whispered. “Remember? All the ladders and baskets of cherries, redder than a sunset. Most people wear red too, to celebrate, and then it’s all pitting and baking and jams and pies for days after. Remember?”
There was a long pause, then a soft answer.
“No, Sam. I’m sorry.”
Sam’s throat tightened in misery, but he tried again.
“Remember that spring that was all storms? Most of the fields were ponds and there were ducks floating on the main road. Remember the day the clouds finally cleared and the sun came out again? All of heaven was blue, and it reflected in all that water so that it was like we were walking in the sky. And all the little lads and lasses splashing among the clouds like laughing birds? Tell me you can still remember that…”
“I’m sorry, Sam,” Frodo said again. “It feels like I’ve used up all my good memories just to get this far.”
“You just need a reminder,” Sam said, as cheerily as he could. “We may have missed it this year, but once we’re home, it’ll be cherries and sunshine, and it’ll feel familiar enough that you’ll remember.”
Frodo didn’t answer or look up.
