[July 1] [Magic Kaitou/Detective Conan} In the Waking
Title: In the Waking
Day/Theme: 1•a dream is nothing but a ghost
Series: Magic Kaito
Character/Pairing: Aoko/Kaito
Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: Characters are still not mine... I have a feeling I’d be better at Japanese if I they were…
Her laughter ran through him as she clung to his arm through the chilly evening. He frowned disapprovingly at her far too bare shoulders, the air damp and still chilled from the rain that had passed through earlier. He slid out of her grasp and placed his own coat over her as the young woman rolled her eyes.
“Don’t be silly—I’m fine. Whatever that fruity thing was its keeping me warm—“ she leaned in to snuggle against his shoulder, but he noticed wryly that she didn’t shed the garment he’d placed over her.
“Mmm whatever would I do if you were to catch a cold though? No replacement for the infamous Aoko!” A hand ran through one of the loose locks of hair that fell over her shoulder.
“Probably the same thing we’ll do if Kaitou KID catches a cold—“ she teased looking up at him with bright eyes, “Take a day off.”
“Mmm I kind of like the sound of that… all the more reason for you to be the one with the jacket. You can make me soup!”
She hit him lightly on the shoulder and shook her head, “Don’t be stupid. I have a job you know, just because you’re silly enough to force me into your coat doesn’t mean I have to bow to your everywhim… especially when an ulterior motive is involved.”
“Mmm yes but I have two jobs—and I’d bring you soup…” he leaned over to nip at her neck as she batted him away. “I’d make it for you, but some how I doubt you’d want even so much as a miso from me.”
Her face contorted at the thought causing him to chuckle, “Stupid.”
“Mmmhmmm”

He woke up with the sun gliding over his face and a warm figure curled up against him. Two smooth legs were entangled with his and they twisted slightly which may have been what wakened him.
Or perhaps the face nuzzling between his shoulders.
Or simply the sunlight pouring in their window.
He started to shift and heard a murmur of discontent from the second party, “Early~” groaned the young woman who let go only enough to snuggle under the sheets and immediately curl back up against him. “Cold too…” she added in a slightly more awake tone.
“Mmm I’m pretty warm where I am…” said the young man with a grin. “Someone’s keeping me quite toasty.” He caught one of the arms uncovered and let his fingers glide down its length to tickle her lightly. She murmured frustratedly, but he noticed she finally peeked her head back up to open one eye.
“Evil.”
“Love you too?”
“….What are you some sort of demon in disguise?” she said maneuvering to look at him. He grinned as he saw her take in the view, not that she didn’t most mornings (well he did the same thing), but… “Some of us appreciate our sleep you know.”
“Aw… it’s still early, but how could I go back to sleep when I have such a lovely little angel next to me hmmm?” he snagged her waist and pulled her to him. Lifting himself up slightly leaned over her as her lips broke into an unwilling smile.
“Early Kaito~” she let out a yawn but was cut off as he snagged a kiss.
“Mmm and no heist…” he whispered in her ear, “Which means I get you all to myself today…” he pressed his lips softly against her neck as she smiled further.
“I can’t think when you… ah…”
“Exactly.”

“Kaito…” her face was red as she stood behind the school and twisted her hands in front of her. “Kaito I… look I…”
He sighed stuffing his hands in his pockets nervously. And here it was. She’d finally had enough and decided that she wasn’t going to let him get away with being Kaitou KID. She was going to tell her father. Tell Hakuba all she knew. Leave him for good. Walk away and—
“…I can’t take it anymore! Kaito… I… I like you!” a hand flew to cover her mouth as her eyes started filling with water. “I know its stupid. I know its… I know your KID and I know that I’ve been terrible… but you haven’t been any better! And I can’t do this anymore… we’re graduating and I swore I’d tell you before than and—“
And with a grin as wide as any KID would give he strode over and brushed his lips shushing her for good.

“Dad! Dad!” cried the little girl as she ran to him from across the park. Aoko laughed as she followed along behind, barely able to keep up with the child who was already flying up in his arms. “Daddy I managed to make one of the flowers bloom!!! Didn’t I Mommy? Tell him!”
“She did-“ said Aoko with a knowing smile, “Just like her Father.”
“Yup!”
“That’s my Nozumi-chan!”
“Uh huh! Wanna see?” The little girl beamed back up at him, bright blue eyes glistening in the early morning sunlight as she could barely hold still long enough for him to hold her.
“Of course love—“
“Mmmkay so I did just like you said and—“ Kaito slid a hand over the little girl’s mouth quickly and raised an eyebrow with a chuckle.
“A magician never reveals their secret yes?”
The little girl blinked a couple times and then with an even wider grin yelled, “Yah! Then… Here ya go Daddy!” she held up her hand and suddenly there was a giant daisy in front of his face causing him to sneeze, while he heard Aoko laugh next to him.
He sneezed again and tried to not make a face, “Ah… that’s wonderful Zumi-chan” he said ruffling his daughter’s hair. “Now I’ll just have to teach you to pick different flowers.”
The girl pouted, “But I like daisies…”
“Yes… well…” he sneezed again, “What about that trick where I promised to teach you how to make yourself disappear eh?” He grinned and started to hold up a hand.
“Nooooo~ Mommy stop him!!! Daddy~!”
Their laughter rang throughout the park.

“I love you” she said leaning against his shoulder, her eyes only half open as she looked down into her lap.
“Aoko?” he heard his own voice crack as he looked down at her.
“I… I love you… I mean… I guess you knew by now… but.. I just wanted to-“ he pressed a finger against her lips and a soft smile slipped onto his face.
He leaned forward so that their foreheads touched, and she finally met his eyes as he whispered back, “I know. And it’s going to be fine… I promise alright?”
“…I wouldn’t have turned you in…” she said softly. “I… I wouldn’t have let you go alone either. I—“ she started to push away and he let her move away but caught her hand and began making small circles in her palm.
“You’re here… You know I wouldn’t have held it against you, but you’re here so none of that really matters anymore anyway right?”
“Kai—“ He brushed his hand against her cheek and was greeted with a delicate blush.
He brushed her lips in a soft kiss and she broke away even redder as he laughed, “Just for the record? I love you t-“
*~ * ~ * ~
He woke up with a start.
The room was dark and cold and he’d managed to kick almost every cover off the bed. Turning over he saw the clock read “4:47” in the darkness, its green light faint and just barely readable.
“Ugh…” he managed as he turned onto his back staring up at the dark ceiling of the hotel room.
Thousands of miles from home and he still couldn’t stop dreaming about her. Thousands of miles, with an ocean between and night after night, dream after dream it was…
“Forget it…” he hissed angrily as he swung himself out of the bed and open the curtains to look out at the city.
It was the worse part about sleeping. Not going to sleep. Not the dreams themselves, but rather the waking up.
Waking up to an empty bed with just him. Waking up to no calls from home, no one waiting to see if Kuroba Kaito ever planned to go back to Japan at all. No one to whisper his secrets to, or pull a rose out for, or capture for a kiss.
He looked at the desk where he had all of his work scattered out around it. On top the news with, “Visiting inspector to catch Kaitou KID. Swears she’ll see him behind bars” with a picture of a particularly angry Aoko.
Ghosts.
So alive. Dammit he even saw her once in awhile, especially since she was on his case but—
He moved again and flopped back onto his bed trying to hide in the darkness and stop his mind from going off the deep end.
Ghosts.
A dream is nothing but a ghost that sought to haunt him for eternity.
If only he could just drift off to sleep and stay there…
But he always woke up…
Perhaps one day—
“Aoko…” he whispered as he closed his eyes.
But for now it was all he had.
And it would have to be enough.
