Wuji knew he might be imposing things on her, this strange young lady who had no hesitation in kicking a man's broken legs - something he could see his mother doing, although she would have done it with more calculation than spite - but she did look like his mother: the shape of her nose, the delineation of her temples, the hints of a similar, angry grace. His parents had not been much on his mind since Zhu Changling cornered him into the cave, so the resemblance could really be there. Or perhaps imbuing your benefactors with hopeful meanings was part of being an adult. At this point anything was possible.

"You ought to smile more often," he told her, huddled next to him.

"Sure, so I'd look more like your beautiful Miss Zhou," she replied in an accusing, dreamy voice. "Shut up and go to sleep."

The night air stung his exposed skin, and muted snores rose from all around him. He folded his arms closely across his stomach, trying to give himself some extra warmth. For once, he wished his mother's face was still sharply sketched on his memory, rather than being a vibrant shadow stretched on the ground.
