The postman watched the truck speed away, and looked down at himself. He seemed to be all in one piece, even if his heart was apparently trying to get out, and so he headed back to his van and sat down. “Well, that was a stroke of luck.”

NOT EXACTLY, a voice said, and the postman froze as Death settled next to him.

“But- I thought-” he blurted. “Was I hit, then?”

One hand reached out, and patted him on the shoulder in as friendly a way as a personage with skeletal hands could manage. NOT THIS TIME, he said, and didn't quite fade away, his shape becoming parts of the landscape’s shadows that didn’t look much like a figure, even if you tilted your head and squinted.

The postman decided he was going to take the roads very carefully after this, and reached for the clipboard.
