They had had enough of dreams. Dreams were things that stroked and snapped at you; dreams were things that kissed and then bit you; dreams gave you things and then took them away again. They would not let themselves be taken in by it again, they promised each other, and they would not give it even the chance to take root.

And so they joined hands and wandered, to seek a place that would be beyond the reach of dreams, but no matter where they rested, the dreams always seemed to find them, however hard they jerked themselves out of them once they realised they were dreaming. At length, they decided that the only solution could be to not sleep at all, and they took up their hands and vowed never to sleep again.

In this way, they continued to wander the world, keeping their vow, and yet, as time passed, they seemed less and less themselves, until they were only a breath on the wind, whispering, we shall not sleep…

That is why you need to close your windows at night, so that those lost wanderers cannot keep you from your sleep.
