A priest had come to the village. He wore a black cloak over traveling clothing and carried a staff. He spoke softly, with a hint of amusement in his voice, and kept his gaze lowered and his lips smiling. He paid for his tea and tipped generously. His inn room was kept impeccably clean, almost like he didn’t bother to use it.
The next day, the villagers heard that a nearby temple, holding many rare books, had burned to the ground. Several priests died, and the rest were scattered. Somehow, no one wanted to say the stranger was a survivor.
