“This is ridiculous!” Lorena roared throwing her arms up in frustration. Couldn’t anyone but her every get anything right? “I ought to skin you and your miserable excuses for parents alive!”

The two young boys ran away in fear for their lives. It didn’t bother her much as they fled. They were worthless. It wasn’t like they couldn’t easily be replaced. Everyone on the island could be replaced. The only way she was able to stay in power is because she had enough people fooled into believing she couldn’t be. She often found herself asking if it was even worth it.

Five years ago the prince of some small country had put a bounty on her head, if she was captured alive and well. Her informants told her that it was because the prince was interested in her. At the time she had rolled her eyes. It was a pitiful bounty, and, well, what interest did she have in some stuffy prince who found pirate ladies interesting.

Now, as she saw crow’s feet forming around her eyes in the mirror, she wondered if she had made the wrong choice. Sure the prince was likely to be stupid and boring, but she could’ve been a princess. Maybe she might not have had the chance to accumulate as much wealth as she had now, but at least it wouldn’t be one invasion by a navy from all going away.

“Madam,” a panting man said as he burst into her study. “A Spanish merchant ship was spotted.”

Lorena smiled as she stood up to issue commands. No, she had not made the wrong choice.
