[5/5] [LOST] Just Another Wednesday

Title: Just Another Wednesday
Day/Theme: 5. there are cracks in the universe
Series: LOST (spoilers up to current US airing)
Character/Pairing: Ben Linus
Rating: PG

There's things he doesn't understand.  His job revolves around making sure everyone thinks he understands everything.  He relies on always having a plan.  Plotting.  Preparing.  Working towards a thousand different eventualities.  Fact is – sometimes he doesn't know a damn thing.  Fact is – some days he knows less than anyone.  But that doesn't stop him.  He just keeps right on trucking.

Right through a dozen blows to the face.  Sometimes he's got more bruises than skin.  Trucking on, through an uncounted number of angry kicks, stabbings, shootings, hell: Rousseau gave him an arrow once, for his trouble.  Not that he didn't have that one coming.  Even he had to give her that.  And then there was the hot pocket.  That was a little different.  Maybe even a bit upsetting; poor Hugo is about the only man Ben's never felt the need to be a total bastard to.  After a drink or two, he might even admit to being a little fond of the guy.  Never hurt anyone.  If everyone in the world has a polar opposite somewhere, Ben's just might be Hugo Reyes.

But that's not on his mind right now.  What's on his mind is a lot of fast dancing.  He's in trouble, and no mistake.  The world's come down around his ears, and all he's got is a bottle of water, a headache from being thrown around an underground temple, and a dead guy that likes to get sarcastic with him.  Yeah.  He could go for a drink.  He'd like to be in London again, maybe break into Widmore's place, take a few bottles of scotch, leave a maddening little mash note.  Stopped by for a drink.  Sorry you weren't in.  Wired your bedroom door to blow.  Love and kisses ~ B.  Why blow the money when you can irritate the hell out of someone instead?

He drops a heavy sigh, getting him a look from one of the others.  Others.  God damn, the word makes him laugh.  It's always Us vs. Them.  Now even he hasn't a damned clue what side he's on.  Except his own.  That's always pretty reliable.  That'll always lead somewhere for him.

Oh, and here comes John.  John's got a job for him.  That's just fantastic.  So he'll be lined up for another few smacks to the face.  Guess it's just another Wednesday for that ol' ex-island despot, Benjamin Linus.

But there's one thing he knows that nobody else does – he knows it down in his very soul.  There's cracks in the universe, and right now, nobody's doing the job of keeping them patched up.  Time's slipping through everyone's fingers, and pretty soon, if someone doesn't go Little Dutch Boy and stick their fingers in the dam, they're all gonna be lost.

The idea gives him a bit of savage glee.  It's one way for it to all be over.  And some days, that's all he really wants.  He wants it to be over.
