Title: Breath Held
Day/Theme: 2. an old friend you just met
Series: Spirited Away
Character/Pairing: Haku/Chihiru
Rating: PG
It was the smell that stopped her in her tracks. The whiff of something that was both deep, green water over cool rocks and the scent of rain-heavy wind over something smooth and sleek. It smelled like a childhood memory of a summer day at the river, like a more recent memory of flying and falling. That same sensation of freefall twisted her stomach and she scanned the crowd, not really sure what she was looking for, but hoping she would recognize it when she saw it.
There was something she had forgotten that only little pieces of life seemed to trigger. Star-shaped candies brought out silly smiles and she didn’t know why. The rustle of paper made her skin crawl. Hearing someone addressed by a shorter nickname left her with a feeling of unease. Now, it was that scent, the cool, wind and water scent that raised gooseflesh on her arms and made her scalp tingle tight under her usual ponytail.
And then, she saw him, watching shyly, hopefully on the other side of a small footbridge. His smile was faint, but certain, and even though his clothes struck her as odd, and his haircut didn’t seem quite right, the eyes were as familiar as a reoccurring dream. She didn’t need to remember all the rules to be holding her breath as she walked across the bridge toward him.
