August 01 -NHK-Be Indomitable, O My Heart
Title: Be Indomitable, O My Heart
Day/Theme: August 1, 2005
Series: NHK Shinsengumi
Character/Pairing: Tsune/Kondou
Rating: PG-13, I suppose?
Notes: Uh... spoilers for the last episode of NHK... maybe PMK as well? Ah, if you know how it ends historically then I'm not spoiling much.
The sky was a brilliant turquoise which went well against the freshly starched fabric of his white haori and hakama--his seppuku outfit.
But he would not be cutting himself today.
Birds chirped. He was distracted by a frog. He watched the tadpoles, transfixed, as the crowd gathered. He bowed to the executioner, asked if he might shave. It would not do for his head to look poorly when on display.
Mother-in-law took a deep breath beside me. She would not want us to see, but we could tell she was crying. As much as the others profess to dislike her, I always liked her. Her harsh words and strict reprimands were only ever that we might better ourselves. She had to be strict because her husband was so soft-hearted. We could not bring him today; it was too much for him. Our daughter was also left at home. But Mother-in-Law and Brother-In-Law are with me.
Mother-in-Law loses composure then, and shouts. Kondou Isami! You've fought well.
The crowd gains nerve. Suddenly, many around us are cheering. The pride of Tama, they cry. The fish in the pond are startled by the cacophony and scatter. The soldiers press in, pikes waving.
I look down again. They are done shaving him, he looks a young man--as he did the day we were married. I sometimes wish that I were a stronger person, less timid and mild--that I could resent him for denying me the quiet life we could have had. I would not have minded being nothing more than the wife of an instructor... but it was not for him. And now there is no more time left.
Suddenly, a cheer from the trees. Sanosuke is there, taunting some of the imperial soldiers. He runs, cheering and waving his arms about. I cannot help but smile. I know then that my husband has touched the hearts of many. It will help in the years to come.
My husband is smiling. His features are perfectly content. A silence comes over everything, only birdsong and the sound of rushing water can be heard.
I am ready, he says, and leans over the river.
The crowd cries out. Mother-In-Law and Brother-In-Law press into me.
I alone am silent.
Edit:Whoops! People are posting for August 2nd already. It's still August 1st for me... stupid time zones. -_-;; Uhh, will post earlier in the future as to not er, ruin the flow.
