( This morning Basil woke with Abaddon still beside him, in this bed under the Domina Rais' roof that was not quite Basil's, and certainly not Abaddon's. Whether Abaddon had been there all night Basil could not determine. He wore the same clothes as yesterday and reclined sidelong outside the covers. Whether or not Abaddon had slept was another question: Basil opened his eyes to find the other reading, head propped on the strut made of one arm and a pillow, book held nonchalant in the other. )
