[March 7] [Elfquest] Sense Evil

Title: Sense Evil
Day/Theme: 7. I’ll undo what heredity’s done to you
Series: Elfquest
Character/Pairing: Winnowill, Windkin
Rating: PG
Comments: This takes place over books 5 and 6, when Windkin was just a baby and before Blue Mountain fell.

She let the child starve until it was too desperate to flinch from her. The humans in her service had once told her, back when they still loved and worshiped her, that children and animals could sense evil under the skin. The wailing little mongrel was both of those things.

It had been ages since she had seen a baby. The last children she had seen had been those accursed wolf-twins that had ruined everything. They had been older than this one, though, with bratty little minds and mouths of their own. This one was an infant, still malleable, and therefore, of interest. She could change it, remake it into something more hers than the flea-bitten wretch that had birthed it.

She was a creator. She didn’t especially enjoy wanting things, but she did enjoy owning them. To truly own it, she had to make it hers, twist it into something she did want, if only for a moment’s satisfaction.

The child had not stopped screaming until she shut its mind down. Brief memories of her own child flickered, but she ignored them. Even asleep, it had pulled back from her, reaching instead for someone else. Anyone else, a part of her noticed. She was far past being hurt by that though. What a child thought was evil was only something too high above it for it to understand, and like any simple beast, it had to be approached carefully, and from a position of power.

So she let it go hungry. She forced it asleep when its noise got on her nerves and waited until finally it would’ve taken food from anyone, even one as evil as she was. She had broken the child. All that was left to do was remove the animal.
