[September 8] [Near Dark] A Thousand Miles (4/26)
Title: A Thousand Miles (4/26)
Day/Theme: September 8th/Twin stars
Series: Near Dark
Character: Jesse
Rating: PG13
When Jesse Hooker was lying in a ditch, listening to the sounds of gunshots fading away in the distance while his life bled out into the mud, Billy Hooker was already six feet under.
The Hooker brothers were Going Places, everyone had always agreed. No one was quite sure where, but those boys had a future ahead of them. Billy, the younger of the pair, was always coming up with some mad scheme or another; it seemed he'd collected a whole gang of the local kids about as soon as he could walk. And Jesse, that boy had a good level head on his shoulders, didn't shy away from hard work; he kept Billy honest, or at least out of the worst kinds of trouble. They were inseperable, for all that there was five years difference in their ages. Years went by, and the boys grew up - they took over the family store; Jesse settled down with Sally, the mayor's daughter, and Billy got hitched to that girl from the next town over - still, those two were never apart.
When the war came, no one was at all surprised when the Hooker brothers were the first to volunteer. It seemed to be what their whole lives had been leading up to - fighting for their homes, for their families, for their freedom. They'd go far, no doubt; they'd be making history.
Billy fell at Pittsburgh Landing, just three months after leaving home.
Jesse'd never regretted signing up with the army, not in that ditch where he'd fully expected to die, and not the century and a half since. When he'd made it back home, when he'd seen his own empty grave next to Billy's, still, he'd not regretted a bit of it.
Billy went out guns blazing, giving his life for a good cause. And as Jesse watched his wife and kids from a distance, careful not to be seen - they were so much older now, it was strange to see that, like the years between had just gone missing - well, he supposed he'd given his life for the cause, too, in a way. And that was fitting. Twin stars shone together; only made sense for them to fall together, too.
Jesse Hooker cast one last look at Sally, at the boys, at her new husband. And then he headed back into town, to tell Severen it was time to get a move on.
No point in longing for the remnants of a star that'd long since burned out.
