[Sept 8] [Fushigi Yuugi] The Dioscuri
Title: The Dioscuri
Day/Theme: Sept 8 / Twin stars

Character/Pairing: Miaka and Yui

They were called double stars, twins, two stars that share an orbit. She stared at the false-color images, at one dense ball of bright colors reaching out tentacles to grapple with a larger one. They were supposed to share matter and energy, but in the photo, it looked like the smaller star was devouring the larger one, stripping it of life.
“Yui?”
She started. “Ah, Miaka?”
The other girl peered at her curiously. “You haven’t turned the page for ten minutes.”
“Oh. Yeah. I just got distracted by something.”
Miaka leaned over to look at her textbook. “Those are stars? They don’t really look like stars to me.”
“They’re called x-ray binary stars. One is a normal star and the other is a dead star, either a neutron star or a black dwarf. The dead star sucks out the energy of the normal star.”
“So they’re like sharing a life?”
“Sort of.”
“Oh, that reminds me of those stories. Something about guys named Castor and Pollen.”
“You mean Castor and Pollux, the twins from Greek mythology. Castor and Pollux are the sons of a mortal woman named Leda. They have two sisters, Clymtemnestra and Helen—of Troy, you know her from the movie. Anyway, Clytemnestra and Castor are the children of Tyndareus, Leda’s husband. Pollux and Helen are the children of Zeus, the king of the gods.”
“..Ohhh.”
“Anyway, Castor died and Pollux didn’t because he’s the son of a god. He refused to become immortal because his brother is dead. What happened then is they shared their mortal life. One day, Castor is alive while Pollux is dead, the next Pollux will be alive and Castor dead. They’re never living at the same day.”
“That’s sad. Pollux saves his brother, but he can never be with him again.”
“Yeah.”
It was quiet again in the coffee shop for a few minutes.
Then, Miaka spoke.
“You were remembering them, right Yui?”
“Suboshi. And Amiboshi. Of course.”
“I was, too.”
“Suboshi gave Amiboshi the liquid to make him forget everything. Suboshi took all the awful stuff, being Seiryuu seishi and all that. It’s kinda like those stars, huh?”
“Yeah. Like Castor and Pollen.”
Yui smiled. “Castor and Pollen. Right.”
