[Sept. 8] [James Bond] "Wonderwall"
Title: Wonderwall
Day/Theme: Sept. 8 - Twin stars
Series: James Bond
Character/Pairing: Bond/Jessica (OFC)
Rating: PG
Note: This is a companion piece to Sept. 4's "Even the Stars Refuse to Shine". It also has something to do with my novel-length Bond WIP, Blind Man's Bluff.
"Star light, star bright..."
She smiled.
Scotland's crisp night air was perfect - not too cold, but it kept the insects at bay. The sky, cloudless, played host to a million white-hot stars. Suddenly James Bond remembered why he loved this land.
"I wish I may, and I wish I might..." at some point her voice had drifted into a melody. "...so goodnight, my someone, goodnight!"
She laughed, giggled really, and moved almost imperceptibly closer to him. He had to remind himself that, coming from her, these familiar signals meant something different.
It meant she missed her father. That was all.
I don't need all that drama.
This was what Bond told himself, when he was so sorely tempted to fold her up in his embrace and carry her upstairs to the soft bed that waited.
"I always feel like singing when the stars are out," she said. "Sometimes they have themes."
"Do they?" Bond asked, smiling in spite of himself.
"Yes. Like that one." She pointed to a particularly bright orb in the sky. "That one's like, youuuuuu're so vain, you prob'ly think this song is about you, you're so VAAAAAIN....!"
He laughed, because her affectation was funny, and because the star was funny, and because he felt so dangerously giddy tonight. Had Christophe slipped something into his drink?
"And that one," she went on, "goes: welcome to de Hotel Cal-i-forn-ya! Such a lovely place - such a lovely face!"
A shaft of light appeared.
"Right, you two," came Christophe's mixed accent. "Get inside, will you? I like to keep an eye on my guests."
Jessica got to her feet, then suddenly cried out, "Oh! Look!" She pointed at the sky.
"Eh?" said Bond. "What?"
"Look! Look at that star! Can't you hear him? He's all like hello hello - HOLA! I'm at a place called VERT-I-GO!"
They both laughed, and Christophe shook his head, shutting the door. Bond and companion made their way, slowly, back to the house.
"What about that one?" Bond asked, pointing. "No, the other. It's terribly bright."
"Look closer," said Jessie. "They're twin stars. Really close together."
She was right. "So they are!"
"So close you can't really tell them apart," she said, a little dreamily.
Bond felt they were treading on dangerous turf.
"Do they have a song?" he asked.
"Yeah."
She smiled.
"And maybe...
You're gonna be the one who saves me...
'cause after all..."
They had reached the house. Bond held the door open for her, and she nodded in acknowledgment.
"You're my wonderwall..."
