[february 13] [original] trust

Title: Trust
Day/Theme: February 13th - One sword dividing slumber
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Raz/Kayl
Rating: PG-13

The only thing that marked his return was his sword sitting against the side of her cabin. Suppressing an excited smile, Kayl rushed forward to earn a closer look. What she saw made her blanch in worry.

Dark red blood coated parts of the sword’s hilt and a small patch of blood stained the grass next to the weapon. Her hands trembled painfully as her hand reached to touch the offending substance. She flinched when she noticed the wetness that greeted her fingers.

Pushing gruesome questions and their possible answers to the back of her mind, Kayl wiped her hands off on her cloak, silently thanking Mister Venzi for giving her a black one, and walked up to the wooden door. Her breathing stopped momentarily when she saw small smears of blood mark the spot where her padlock usually secured the door.

Squeezing her eyes shut for a second, she slowly pushed open the door, muffling a gasp when her palm made contact with the bit of the door’s blood. Stepping into her home, she set her basket of food on the floor and untied the knot holding her cloak together. The young woman shrugged the garment off her shoulders and held it protectively against her chest. Sucking in a sharp breath, Kayl pressed forward into her small room.

“You actually look a bit better than I thought you would.”

Raz muttered something she failed to hear, but it didn’t stop her cleaning the wound that cut into his forehead. Bandages decorated both of his arms and Kayl had made a make-shift sling for his right arm. Despite his injuries, she couldn’t help but smile. At least this time he wasn’t comatose and near death.

“And there you go,” she said, withdrawing her washcloth from his head. Kayl ignored the slightly painful stitch in her stomach that developed as she squeezed out the dirtied water out of the cloth into her wash basin.

“I’m sorry I frightened you.”

The subtle fear in his voice made her stomach twist in guilt. She remembered stifling a shriek when she found him collapsed against the floor, writhing in pain. Pushing the memory to the back of her head, she shook her head and said, “No, it’s fine. You're fine.”

She quickly dried her hands on a dry cloth and directed her gaze back to him. His hair sat limply on his head and the small cuts on his face made him look a bit older than he was. Kayl held back a pout when she realized that he wouldn’t look at her. He flexed his fingers constantly while looking at the outlines of his knees under her bedcovers.

“Hey.”

Raz started and she almost lost herself in the way his red eyes flashed in response, but she ignored the feeling. Kayl climbed onto the side of the bed he wasn’t occupying and tentatively, she placed her hands on both sides of his face. Her heart beat faster when he whispered her name and she smiled in response.

“It’s okay.”

Gently, either out of caution or out of fear, she had no idea, she kissed him. Careful not to irritate his wounds, she ran her hands up his neck into his hair.

She silently cursed herself for suddenly becoming clingy and similar to a frightened little girl. Kayl knew she had a right to worry about his life. He was gone on missions far too often for far too long, but her worry still managed to disgust her.

She believed in him right? Raz possessed a powerful position in his unit didn’t he? If she worried about him then she was selling him short and showing that she placed little confidence in him. Sometimes, she felt like a dirty traitor.

Raz interrupted her thoughts by forcing her to open her mouth, which caused her to squeak lightly. She failed to protest when he slipped his arm out of his sling to grip her shoulder. He broke the kiss and fixed her to the spot with an observant gaze. Kayl felt her blush deepen when he used his free hand to play with her hair.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered and Kayl felt that she was on the verge of tears. He looked so unsure of himself and fearful. It was a change from his casually stoic expression. “But, can you still bear with me?”

Sniffling, Kayl nodded and tried not to laugh when Raz wiped her tears away while looking horribly sheepish but relieved.
