[February 7] [Bible] Seeds

Title: Seeds
Day/Theme: February 7/a pomegranate lamp
Series: Bible
Character/Pairing: Rachel
Rating: G
Word Count: 162
Summary: Poem. What Rachel prays for.

Rachel lights a round lamp and prays.
May your children be as numerous as pomegranate seeds...
As numerous as the fish in the ocean which she has never seen.
With her eyes closed the light still bleeds through
And she sees it --
Generation after generation,
from Jacob
From Leah, Bilhah, Zilpah
And does it matter who?
But she longs to feel the quickening
Though it means she will have her part in this long drama
But she will have her pomegranate seeds
Her small ones.
They will be known in great writings,
and in song
But they will remember also the woman who held them
Who heard their cries before they knew how to pray.
Rachel lights a round lamp and sighs
No one asked if she wanted to be a mother of thousands
Of generations
Of men much glorified
She believes that she will hold her babies to her breast
And tell them secrets not even the great men know.
