Title: Water in the Desert

The suns are setting as Vash the Stampede runs through stone and sand.
"Wolfwood!" he shouts.
He is looking for the shape of a cross, a glimpse of black sleeve, the set of one person's shoulders. But all he sees is desert, falling away to the horizon all around him.
"Wolfwood!"
He listens for that laugh, which was so unmistakably his, and seeks out the scent of sweat and cigarette smoke.
"Wolfwood!"
Still there is only sand. Nick was his. His friend, his lover, his water in this desert. And now he is gone and suddenly Vash is like a child protesting that it just isn't fair.
"It wasn't my fault!" he shouts next.
What should he have done, tell Nick that it was all right to kill now and then, as long as you saved it for special occasions or for really bad people?
But love and peace were supposed to make the world right for everyone. And now Nick is dead and the world is wrong and Vash the Stampede is chasing a ghost in the desert.
"It wasn't my fault!" he says again, but deep inside he isn't sure.
