[February 4] [Harry Potter] Princess

Title: Princess
Day/Theme: February 4/But to hear the mermaids singing
Series: Harry Potter
Character/Pairing: Ginny/Luna
Rating: G
Word Count: 300

“Can you hear them?” Luna asks Ginny. They are lying, arms entwined, near a river far from Hogwarts. It’s summer, and Ginny can see the sun glinting in Luna’s hair.

“Hear what?” she asks. As much as she loves Luna, she is dearly hoping the answer isn’t “Crumple-Horned Snorkacks.”

“The merpeople. They’re singing,” Luna replies in a dream-filled voice.

“What are they singing about?” Ginny asks.

“Oh, it’s a beautiful song, with a story in it. A little human girl hears their beautiful voices and jumps into a lake. And then the merpeople teach her their special magic. But then the lake freezes over and she’s trapped with them.”

“How does she breathe?” asks Ginny, regretting it the moment the words are out of her mouth.

“Well, I don’t know, I haven’t heard the whole song,” says Luna, sounding slightly offended by Ginny’s rationality.

“What happens after she’s trapped with them?” Ginny asks, hoping to make up for her mistake.

“She becomes a princess of the merpeople.”

“Does she marry one of them?” The prospect turns Ginny’s stomach a bit, since she knows what merpeople really look like, but maybe Luna sees that differently too.

“Oh, of course not. She marries her old, old friend, who comes to live under the lake with her.” Luna gives Ginny’s arm a squeeze.

Ginny closes her eyes, listening to the hum of insects and Luna’s breathing, inhaling the scent of the water and the grasses. She is certain the river is much too shallow to hold merpeople, but she doesn’t tell Luna that. In fact she herself is nearly convinced that she just isn’t listening the right way. If she goes to look in the water surely she will see them, singing their song, along with their princess and her old, old friend.
