[4 Feb 2009] [Bleach] Siren Song

Title: Siren Song

Day/Theme: 4 Feb/ But to hear the mermaids singing

Series: Bleach

Character: Ulquiorra.  Introspective (slight Ulqui x Hime) Spoilers for chapter 341

Rating: PG

Once, by Aizen-sama's leave, I read a strange human fairy tale.  About fish-tailed beings that lured men to their death on rocks with their song.  Humans have such strange fancies, how would such a deformed creature survive?  Why would anyone pay heed to a siren no matter how alluring the song might be?

Who knows why Ichimaru passed the book to me in the first place?  Or why Aizen permitted me to carry on perusing it?  It was full of idle fantasies and high adventure so typical of the stories humans seem to enjoy anyway.

I can't remember much about it anyway having dismissed most of it offhand as overly sentimental trash.

...

Its strange to think that it still stings.  After so many years.  An unaccustomed sensation indeed.

Either I've become more like a Hollow, or, you've become more Human.

I raise wondering fingers to the wound, slightly surprised to find that they come away bloody.  My mind tells me that it's merely a superficial cut.

It also tells me something else.   For in that instant, her face flashes before me and everything becomes blindingly clear.

I see.

On one hand, it is good that I haven't lost my analytical abilities.

On the other hand, this is most certainly a new complication.

I have become more human?

...

My resolve firms.

If to hear the siren song is to lose oneself to madness, then that madness must end now.
