[Jan. 4][Soylent Green] Walking in the City in the Rain

Title: Walking in the City in the Rain
Day/Theme: Jan. 4, 2009 "the language of cities"
Series: Soylent Green
Character/Pairing: Thorn
Rating: PG

Thorn just couldn't get as excited about investigating a crime that took place in a poor person's home as he did about upper class cases. He questioned witnesses and checked out suspects the same as always, but there was nothing worth stealing in the whole building, let alone this crowded flat. There must've been at least eight people living in there. "Pssh, soylent yellow, soylent red," he moved the cans around in the cabinet, but no matter how many times he looked, he wasn't going to find anything interesting. He left the scene sulking.

It was raining out on the street. Thorn stuffed his hands into his pockets and clattered down the metal steps to the pavement, paying little attention to the lukewarm water spattering his body. At least when it rained the stairs weren't completely blocked with bodies. These days it was a wonder anyone could walk in the city at all. Wherever you went there were throngs and throngs of people, clogging the streets, standing in lines, taxing the reserve of the police with their noise and rioting. Even with the rain, a few scattered souls remained leaning against the buildings, sitting out in cars, or huddled under raincoats.

Thorn tripped on the gutter, splashing dirty water on his pants. He gritted his teeth and righted himself, continuing on through the alleyway back toward the book-filled place he shared with Sol. He was sick of being dirty and being stuck in this gross, grimy city. At least his home was neat and relatively clean. ...Could use more soap though.

As he neared his building, Thorn squinted at the horizon. Past the stacks of flimsy apartments, he could see the towers and highrises of the rich, shining against the gray of the cloudy, polluted sky. ...It'd be nice to get a case that would get him into a place like that again... The last time he'd snuck out a banana- an honest to goodness banana! Sol had loved that. And it had been so cool there... It smelled good too. A guy like him would never live that life. He'd always be just another part of the riffraff.

The rain started to slow. "At least I've got a job," Thorn shrugged, going inside.
