[January 3][Original] Letter

Title: Letter
Day/Theme: January 3 / her handwriting
Series: Original / Misfits
Character/Pairing: Dennis Lawson
Rating: G
Notes: I meshed today's prompt with one of the prompts from [livejournal.com profile] runaway_tales  (Vanilla #28 - mail / letter / package) because they fit together nicely.

He looked at the letter he held in his hand and while his brain read the words, he couldn’t connect them in a way that would make sense. It wasn’t because her handwriting was hard to read, he had worked with her long enough to get used to it and when she wrote longhand it looked much better than when he did. It was just that the content didn’t make sense.

He read the words for what felt like the first time even though he probably had them memorized by now. He wished he would understand what she meant, what it was she was trying to say exactly and he reached for his cell phone. She was on his speed dial; he just had to press 2.

He held his breath anxiously as he waited for her to answer but instead he got her voicemail which meant that she had turned her cell phone off which she never ever did – she couldn’t, not with all her obligations. He felt panic slowly overcome him as the words in the letter started to slowly make sense to him, as he finally allowed his mind to understand what it was she had wanted to tell him when she had written those lines and placed the letter in his underwear drawer. She had put much thought into that, he know, because otherwise she would have put it somewhere generic, on his nightstand maybe or on his desk in the office but she knew him well enough to know that had she placed it on the desk, he probably wouldn’t have found it or buried it under paperwork.

He read the letter once more and only now was it that he absorbed its content and when he was done, he stood motionless. Tears had started to stream down his face but he didn’t even notice.
