“We’re going to die,” Lynn said matter of fact when she handed Hank a cup of coffee, sitting down on the couch next to him in the dark room.

Hank remained silent, not knowing what to say. Lynn might be his partner but that didn’t mean that he felt fully comfortable around her although he liked her better than most of his other teammates.

“Don’t you want to spend the time you have left with your friends?” He asked after a few minutes during which none of them had said a word.

“Why should I?” she asked calmly. “Face and Shania are probably screwing their brains out as we speak, I’m sure. And Wes and Hobbie … well, we both know what they are up to. I’d only be in the way, so I might as well spend the last few hours with my partner.”

“You don’t really want to,” he pointed out.

“What I want even less than to be with you is to be alone, so would you mind just holding me and pretending that we actually like each other?”

Hank hesitantly reached out and wrapped his arm around her shoulder, pulling Lynn into an embrace. She shuddered as his cold hands touched her but didn’t pull away. Instead, she held still, allowing him to pull her back onto the couch so they laid side by side, his body pressed against hers.

Lynn placed her head on his shoulder, closing her eyes, trying to pretend that the man was actually her boyfriend but she knew that his smell was too distracting. Not that she actually needed Kev to be there, she just didn’t want to be alone and Hank was just as good as anyone else.

“Have you fallen asleep?” she asked after he hadn’t moved for quite a while, his breath steady, his grip on her still tight.

“I didn’t think you wanted to talk.”

“I don’t,” she sighed.

“You know you could probably talk me into having sex with you without much effort,” Lynn whispered against his chest after not having moved for a long time, just allowed him to hold her.

“I guess so.” He indicated a shrug. “But why should I? You’d close your eyes and pretend I was your boyfriend and I really don’t need to have sex one last time before I die; not if the woman I’m with could give a damn about who I am.”

Lynn inhaled his scent. “You’ve sure got a lot of requirements, McDonald.”

“And you don’t fill them, darling. So what is it that upsets you? That I won’t sleep with you or that I have high standards?”

Lynn didn’t answer. She didn’t want to sleep with Hank but she had thought he was the scary one and now she wasn’t so sure anymore. After all, he was the one with standards while the others seemed like wild animals for just wanting to fuck, no matter whom. She didn’t like the idea that now that their world was ending her last realization would be that McDonald wasn’t the psychopath she had thought him to be. Here, at the end of the world, she had found a new man in her partner. A man worth working with, a man worth spending the last few hours of her life with; just being held.
