“Why are you doing this?“ Kyla asked, her voice trembling as she pulled herself out of Tristan’s embrace, her gaze lowered so she wouldn’t meet his.

The young pale man shrugged. “Our fates are intertwined, Princess. You might not have accepted that yet but I’m certainly not fighting it.”

Surprised by this answer, she slowly raised her head so that her cold grey eyes met his blue ones. “What … what do you mean?”

“I am tied to you. If I want to, I can walk out the door and never see you again but I would always know that I wasted my potential by not staying with you.”

Kyla rolled over and propped herself up on her elbow to be able to look at him better, hoping that that would make it easier for her to understand his cryptic words.

“I have opinions that starkly contrast anyone else’s in this country. And I know how to express myself but I’ll never get to say anything that will be listened to unless I stay with you.”

The color left Kyla’s rosy cheeks. “You’re using me?”

Again, Tristan shrugged. “Just like you’re using me.” He slowly lifted his arm to grab her thin wrist. They both knew that if Kyla wanted to get up, she just would. Nothing could keep her in this bed with Tristan. She was stronger than him and subduing him would have been easy had she really wanted to but she just allowed him to hold on to her wrist without moving.

“You offered,” she reminded him. “You said you’d help me if I wanted help. If I decided to take my mother’s mantle you’d stick around.”

“And I will.”

Kyla nodded. “I know, Tristan.” She didn’t blink. “I want to know why though.”

“Because we are in this together. You have the title but you have no experience. That’s where I come in.”

“You have no right to.”

A sly smile crossed Tristan’s lips. “I do, Kyla. You gave me the right when you gave me your blood.”

And Kyla slowly nodded, understanding now that in this world there was no such thing as good intentions and try to hide it as he might, Tristan Shaw was still one of them. He had ulterior motives, just like everyone else.
