[December 27][Original] Coming Back To You

Title: Coming Back To You
Day/Theme: December 27 / come back in joy, come back in pain
Series: Original / Misfits
Character/Pairing: Kev, Lara
Rating: PG

They had fallen out so many times that people made fun of it, said it was part of their relationship to have fights that would keep them apart for many months, even years before they reconciled but that in the end they always would and it was a relief to hear people say that after an extremely bad break-up; it was what Lara needed to hear in those instances because it wasn’t the man she was angry at – not really – it was just the circumstances that made things impossible right now.

Her unexpected pregnancy had led to a break-up that he hadn’t been able to figure out. She had distanced herself from him, started fights whenever possible; done her best to drive him away and if that meant driving him into another woman’s arms, then she would do that. Eventually, it had worked, she had made sure he would never know about her pregnancy, about the abortion she had been too afraid to tell him about. She had done it for herself, she knew that but she hadn’t been sure how he would react or having to look at him afterwards, so making him leave had been the only viable option.

Lara went on with her life, not knowing when she would see him next, over time she grew unsure if she ever would after the team split up. She was sure she could have found him, had she wanted to and she hadn’t sought him out because if he was to come back, he’d come back by himself.

And so he did in the most unexpected way. In a suit with a briefcase and a smug smile on his lips that hit her as if she had been punched in the stomach. He remained nearby but never close, didn’t even try to talk to her, to reconcile like she wanted him to. He took his time as if his intention was to torture her. When he first unexpectedly gathered her into his arms, pulled her towards him in a kiss filled with passion, with relief, with joy, things slowly went back to normal and she expected him to stay this way forever.

Of course it didn’t. The next break-up was something he wanted. He wanted to settle down, try something new, a normal life instead of the adventure-filled life they – but mainly she – led. They parted ways silently and she knew that she wasn’t ready yet. She might be older than him but she wasn’t as mature, not ready to settle down yet.

It took them years to get back together and this time it wasn’t the happy reunion that built up slowly. He came to her broken, lost and without direction in life, having lost his family, some the people he loved most because of a stupid mistake, because of love. And when he showed up at her doorstep, she took him in without saying a word, held him while he silently cried and she knew that they needed each other and maybe their game of cat and mouse was over; maybe it was time to just stop the fights, to take the next step instead of taking a step backwards for every step they took forward. She was finally ready.
