[Dec 14] [Princess Mononoke] Progress

Title: Progress
Day/Theme: 14) who knows perhaps I'll catch me a God
Series: Princess Mononoke
Character/Pairing: Lady Eboshi
Rating: PG

Life wasn’t fair and Eboshi had lived long and hard enough to know that sometimes it could be unfair in her favor. She intended to keep it like that as long as possible. She didn’t trust emperors or gods. They let too many people suffer to uphold their own inscrutable rules, and she for one, had had enough.

It wasn’t fair that perfectly decent, hardworking girls were sold into brothels to wear themselves out in constant battles with staving off pregnancies and diseases. It wasn’t fair that the lepers existed in such misery even when they weren’t contagious. It wasn’t fair that she had to sit back and go hungry because a monster left over from the old days didn’t want to share the forest.

Like called to like. There was iron under those trees and it sang to the iron in her own will. There would be no need to protest unfairness if she had it. Armed with profits and bullets and the loyalty of those she had rescued from their own injustice, there would be nothing that could stop them. Not the traditional fears of the mountain spirits, not the insane wolf goddess or her three children, not the foreign boy with the curse, not pity for him, not fear of the emperor or his samurai, not the boars, not Jigo and his treachery, not the Daywalker, not the Nightwalker.

Eboshi’s determination had evolved into contempt. She would destroy that which stood in her way, be it the old gods or the old taboos. Unlike them, she would take full responsibility for her actions. They wouldn’t be needed anymore. Not by her, or her people. Perhaps she would be remembered as something like a goddess herself someday.

That thought made her tight, determined smile curl upwards. She didn’t expect it, and it didn’t matter. She clutched her gun tighter and didn’t let her stride hesitate as she led her army into the trees. Moro, Mononoke, or the Daywalker, all could bleed and die if faced without fear, and she would do it if it meant paving a new way through the woods. It would be a better way, for the brothel girls, the lepers, and all her people who looked to her. It would be her way.
