[Dec 10] [10th Kingdom] Unhappy Endings
Title: Unhappy Endings
Day/Theme: 10) here's vengeance for your story-books

Character/Pairing: Virginia/Wolf

Virginia had wasted enough time thinking about Wolf, but one thing that was clinging to her mind was how hunted he could seem. Maybe it was only his usual predatory glee that made a sudden bout of uncertain prey behavior so noticeable, but she had noticed and now it turned over and over in her mind.
He lived in a fairy tale story book land after all, home of happy endings. What did he have to be so nervous about unless he really was the villain he kept swearing he wasn’t?
But then, she remembered the iron shoes the Troll King had put in the fire for her to wear as soon as they turned white. That had been in a story… Snow White, she thought. Memories of other fairy tale punishments came then, of having a belly slit open and either heavy rocks or hot coals sewed up inside. Eyes were often gouged out by thorns or birds. Hearts were served on platters. Heads were lopped off left and right.
There was that one, she had liked it at first, with the princess and the talking horse. But the princess had been betrayed, the horse’s head had been cut off to keep it from telling, and the head nailed to a wall where it gave sad advice to the princess. That had upset her as a child, and now that she was dealing with talking animals and a possible relationship to the queen, it made her a little queasy.
Maybe Wolf was right to be prepared for things to get very nasty, very quickly. How he kept any hope for happy endings was beyond her.
