There was one like her in every generation. She was reborn like the seasons. Summer was grand, summer was glorious, but always, always blood-red Autumn came and killed her, outshone her, and took the crown for her own. This was the way of Queens.
A clever woman with the strength of will to do what had to be done didn’t need to be beautiful or be blessed by fairies or be rescued by anyone. A clever woman knew enough to keep her cleverness hidden, as well as her weapons. Hide them behind sweet smiles and in sweet apples, and no one would be the wiser until the poison stopped their hearts.
It didn’t hurt that she was, in fact, beautiful and blessed, Christine thought, in front of her mirrors. She had also been rescued, once, but now she was taking care of herself.
