[Nov 27] [Professor Layton] Puzzling Situation
Title: Puzzling Situation
Day/Theme: November 27 / you say love is a chemical reaction.
Series: Professor Layton
Character/Pairing:Layton, Luke
Rating: G
Excerpt:“You can ask me anything,” he said the first day Luke was under his charge.
“Really?! Anything?! You must know everything!”
“Not quite.” Hershel chuckled.
These days, he was regretting those words. He never expected the boy to grow up quickly-- but he was. It started gradually with the boy outgrowing his clothes with each season, his vocabulary becoming more complicated, and then-- smack-- the boy was asking questions about of all things- love.
“What is love?” Luke asked curiously, kicking his legs and leaning on the kitchen table.
Hershel choked on his tea.
“Is that sort of question inappropriate? Somehow?” Luke stared at the spilled tea.
“Not at all,” the professor said, mopping up the mess with his napkin, uncertain how to explain the concept of love. He had been in love once, and still he couldn't capture it in a neat, even category.
After cleaning up he set the napkin on the china, along with the cup. “Love is...” He paused.
Luke was literally on the edge of his seat. “Is what?”
“There are many theories as to what love is. Some think it is a drive much like hunger... as a way to encourage... intercourse.” He said the last bit in a rush. “And for the parents to raise the child together.”
“That can't be all...” Luke pressed.
“Well... there are studies that show that being in love makes one happy and happier persons live longer so...”
“That still doesn't explain what love is.”
The professor sighed inwardly. He scrounged to recover what he had felt back then, then fumbled to put it into words.
“I suppose love is responsibility. When you say you love someone, you mean that you will take care of that person. For example, if something were to happen to you, I would be worried sick, Luke.”
“Oh, I get it!” Luke beamed, then pressed his thumb to his lip. “Still, that can't be all.”
“You're right. It also means that should you have a disagreement, or if you're mad at the other person, you still care for them all the same and forgive them.”
“That's not everything, right? No matter how many times you explain it, it feels like there is more to it.”
“You're quite right. Even I can't fully explain it, I'm afraid.”
“Love is a puzzle, isn't it?” Luke said half-jokingly.
