[Nov. 25, 2008][Tales of Legendia] Cold as Ice

Title: Cold as Ice
Day/Theme: Nov. 25, 2008 "uninnocent these conversations start"
Series: Tales of Legendia
Character/Pairing: Walter, Fenimore, Shirley
Rating: PG

"Don't you ever get tired of being more machine than man?" Fenimore asked Walter. Surrounded by the automata, his cold demeanor did little to set him apart from the mechanical soldiers. He had been working with the Whisper Crystal all night to gain control over them. The single automata that had awoken earlier upon the initial visit of Senel and his friends to the ruins still only stuck to her side, ignoring Walter's commands.

Walter, tired and strained by the stress of the situation, did not relish the comparison. "Fenimore, I have no idea what you're talking about. Don't you have anything more important to do than bother me?" he snapped.

Fenimore was unfazed by his accusations. She knew exactly what she wanted to say and she was going to say it. Walter didn't intimidate her. "I'm talking about how everything you do is about trying to protect Shirley. You're always just going around frustrated that you can't do your job as well as you'd like. Don't you have any other emotions? Don't you ever think about anything other than Shirley? Heck, you don't even think of her as Shirley, do you? To you she's just the Merines!" she accused him pointedly.

"It's not like you don't think about her being the Merines!" he shot back.

"Don't avoid my question, Walter. If you want to talk about me, we'll talk about me later. Right now I'm asking about you," she pinned him down with her sharp words.

For a moment, she imagined that he looked almost hurt, but the wounded quality in his eyes passed so quickly she almost thought she had imagined it. "I'm the same as anyone else, Fenimore, but I was born with a duty," he told her icily, "And I know that I can't neglect it. If I let Shirley down, I let our entire people down. If you were in my place, you'd be a fool to do otherwise. When this is all settled... Who knows. Maybe I'll crack a smile or something."

"Sorry," Fenimore apologized. She didn't feel exactly contrite, but she had never meant to hurt him. "I hope that you do smile then."

"I guess we'll see," he answered tersely.
