[Nov. 17, 2008][Final Fantasy VI] Yellow Tulips

Title: Yellow Tulips
Day/Theme: Nov. 17, 2008 "a slow escalation of yearning"
Series: Final Fantasy VI
Character/Pairing: Terra (Terra/Edgar), Katrine
Rating: G

When spring came, the field burst forth with yellow tulips. Terra found herself gaping in awe on the day they bloomed. She would never have guessed that such beauty had lain sleeping beneath the earth of these windswept fields. They were like the color of sunshine. The color of a new day.
She hummed happily to herself as she swept the steps and washed the clothes. It was still early and the sun hung low over the fractured land. There were many scars left to be healed after Kefka's reign of terror. All the destruction that he had wrought might take more than her lifetime to be fully put behind the population of the world.

The rosy light on the flowers was a beautiful sight, but it was still too early to wake up the children to see it. "Good morning, Terra... Oh, wow," Katrine greeted her, then proceeded to be equally awed as Terra had been by the scene before them.

"It's amazing, isn't it? As if it wasn't enough of a surprised when we first saw the tulips poking out of the ground, for them to be all this buttery yellow..."

"The kids will love this," Katrine smiled. "Duane is changing the baby. I want him to see it too."

Terra sighed and picked up some clothespins, moving to continue with her work. She felt at home here taking care of the orphans and helping Katrine and Duane raise their child, but she wouldn't have minded more frequent contact with her old comrades either. She could imagine Relm painting the field of flowers or Locke getting Cyan to help him craft a bouquet with them to give to Celes. Or Edgar, a single tulip in his hand, approaching her with his usual self-assured grin on his face. Terra sighed again.

Katrine knelt down to pick up some small socks, which she passed to Terra to speed the work along. "Is there someone you wish was here to share this with you?"

"Oh, uh, I guess so."

"Your yearning sighs were a pretty dead giveaway," Katrine giggled.

"Is- is it really that obvious?! I didn't realize," Terra blushed slightly. Why was it that love was so much easier for others to identify than it was for her? "But you're right. I keep thinking about Edgar."

"The flowers won't be gone in a day. Write to him," Katrine urged, with a silly wink at the end of her remark.

"Well, maybe I should," Terra replied.
