[Nov. 14, 2008][Original] The Smiling Author
Title: The Smiling Author
Day/Theme: Nov. 14, 2008 "miniature bridges, your mouth."
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Kojiro, Saskia
Rating: G
"I heard that you were writing a book about...well, the war, I guess. Duskany didn't really talk about what it was supposed to be about," Saskia said with a laugh.
"Actually, I finished it last month," Kojiro answered. He set down his drink and he smiled. During the revolution, he had rarely smiled at all, but here he was, flashing a full set of shining teeth long enough for everyone present to get a good look at them. Saskia had not been close to him during the war. It had been an alliance born from a shared enemy- the expansionist government of Rihaku at the time. Now his smile was so strong and steady it seemed like a foot bridge she could walk across to meet and befriend the real, kind, friendly Kojiro who had never been able to truly emerge until his trial's and the nation's were past.
The red-haired princess smiled back at him. "Good for you. I wouldn't have ever known you were a writer."
"Eh," the dark-haired young man shrugged, "I'm nothing special. It's just in this instance- when it comes to the revolution, that is- I had experiences that no one else had. And someone's got to tell about it first hand. History can't forget this." He kept his eyes focused on Saskia's hair or nose or cheek as though he was a little uncomfortable about making eye contact with her for very long, but his voice was strong and earnest as he spoke of his book. It was obviously a meaningful subject to him.
"I might like to read it," Saskia told him. She wouldn't have said it if she hadn't meant it.
"Just don't tell Anabel what I said about her in it," Kojiro urged. He was still smiling, but his tone seemed slightly apologetic.
Saskia's curiosity was piqued. "So, you have some harsh words for the new queen then?"
Kojiro slid his gloved fingertip along the rim of his glass. "Quite the opposite, though I don't particularly like to say so. But that doesn't mean I want Anabel or any of her people to have to know about it."
It wasn't he answer that Saskia had expected. She laughed. "You're an unusual guy, Kojiro!"
