[Nov. 13, 2008][Original] Sentimental Roses
Title: Sentimental Roses
Day/Theme: Nov. 13, 2008 "a sharp tongue, an Achilles' heel."
Series: Original (Navigator)
Character/Pairing: Julian, Ringo, Yu, Marta, May, Kallo
Rating: G
"Fireweed is a little plant with purple flowers that grows on the ground after fires have swept through an area," Yu suggested to the doctor.
"Thistle?" May piped up. She figure it was self-explanatory.
Marta read diligently through a small, battered book labeled, "Flowers." "Spiderflower, also called skunkweed. Guess what it smells like when crushed?"
"Akquat," Kallo countered, "It's sort of like an underwater beggarweed with seeds that stick to fabric. Except its flowers are orange and fuzzy."
"How do you even know anything about plants on Earth?" May wondered. She tipped her head toward the Lingwan skeptically.
"I read a lot of books," Kallo replied curtly.
"Partridge-peas!" Ringo burst out noisily, "That's perfect!"
Marta flipped ahead through her book to try and locate the aforementioned plant. "Do you have any clue what we're talking about?" Yu, the resident plant expert, challenged Ringo.
"Oh, yeah, sorry. Those ones that curl up when you touch 'em are like Dr. Jet, not Stuart," he chuckled.
Julian eyed the traveler icily over the edge of his computer screen. He didn't appreciate Ringo's smart mouth.
"Bugbane's stinky too," May pointed out.
Julian adjusted the deep red roses in their vase. He couldn't stop touching them. They smelled sweet and were so, so red. Red like ripe strawberries or a stop sign. "I think I've made up my mind," he said quietly. It took a few seconds for his guests to realize he was speaking to them.
"Will you tell us what you decided?" Marta asked, closing her book.
"N-no," the doctor shook his head. "It's too private. ...I can't stop that idiot Stuart from blabbing to you about it though."
"Well, I for one am just glad to help out," Ringo beamed proudly as he left the infirmary.
"You didn't help out at all!" May yelled at her friend, chasing after him while Marta and Yu departed at a more leisurely pace.
Julian leaned over the flowers and breathed deeply. Their fragrance was fresh and cool. It was fairly unfamiliar to him. Kallo watched the doctor, smiling in silence.
