[Nov 11] [Culture Shock] [I lie, but only for you]
Title: I lie, but only for you
Day/Theme: Nov 11//i love you with so much of my heart that none is left to protest.
Series: Culture Shock and the Roses (original)
Character/Pairing: Chris/Bets
Rating: PG
There’s a voice that comes to him, in the dark quiet when he is a lone with his thoughts, brining doubts and fears and secrets. For most, this little voice would be a ‘conscious’, but he tries to ignore it.
Ignore the words, pretend they’re not there.
You’re lying to her.
Tell her the truth. Tell her everything.
Would she still love you then?
“Yes” he tells himself. “Yes, she would.”
Then why won’t you tell her? She’ll hate you if you keep lying to her.
She’ll hate you.
“No.” He wanted to act on the voices advice. But how do you tell your girlfriend that you’re a monster? Some night terror that haunts the streets and is the antiphony of everything she stands for.
How do you tell someone you’ve been lying to them for years, denying everything you are for her.
That’s what Chris had been doing. Lying to her, avoiding the truth, hiding his true face. How could he explain that it was because she was his safe haven, the only person in the world that he could be human with. That when she touched him the world trembled, and when she told him “I love you” it cut through every doubt and worry he had.
She was his home. She loved him for the tiny, hidden part of himself that he let no one else see. So he would not tell her of his real job, or of the reason why he came to her bruised and battered every morning.
He wouldn’t tell her, because then she might hate him for his mask, or worse yet, fall in love with the perfect, rich-boy image that the rest of the world saw. And he couldn’t take that. Not from someone he loved so much.
Chris never paused to think that he was expecting to little out of his girlfriend. He never considered that she might be just as willing as he to take up the mantle as defender, nor that in her position as police woman she might already know about his position at the head of a major corporation.
He was too confused and insensible. The world spun around him and he struggled to keep a calm demeanor, and then collapsed into her silence, hidden in her warmth and love.
He would do everything in his power to keep her. Even if it made their parting all the more painful.
