[August 1] [Fruits Basket] Over the Dial
Title: Over the Dial
Day/Theme: 08-01-05/Be indomitable, o my heart
Series: Fruits Basket
Character/Pairing: Kureno/Arisa
Rating: G
This takes place after Tohru sneaks into the Sohma residence with Momiji's help to speak to Kureno about Arisa.
It is a bright morning, the sunrays soaking the windowsills, even penetrating through his lonesome workroom. His eyes are that of a shattered heart as he awakes, realizing once again that he’s locked inside. He rises and his feet touch the wooden floor, cold sensation against his skin and it seems as if nothing can give him warmth then—perhaps except her smile.
He wonders if he’ll ever see her again. He has thought about it many times, a life without a lover to match. The thought brings him grief and fear; he doesn’t want to die alone. Instead he wishes to move, to get away from here, to try and live again.
Stepping out of the chained room, his walk leads him to the gardens and his gaze unwillingly fixes at that one spot. He silently accuses himself of utter shame, but he’s unable to find a distraction. All comes crashing down again.
“Uo-chan would like to see you again sometime. She- she misses you a lot.”
It’s where a friend buried a torn paper, a means for him to reach her one more time.
“I’ll just leave this here. It has her phone number and address on it, so… if you can contact her somehow…”
He had refused so coldly then, feeling the sensation of heartbreak slowly seeping through his joints, nearly bringing a stranger to tears.
But what is true now? Her voice echoes off the empty hallways each night. Remembering her laughter twists his insides until he knows he’s alive. It’s more than once a day that her smile and tears linger in a vision, that he reaches out with a longing hand only to realize it is and it will always be a dream.
His trail of thoughts stops as his hands hit the warm earth (it’s almost like instinct, something that he needs), gently digging to find whatever there is left of a connection to her. An unknowing grin etches at his mouth when he hears a familiar crinkle of the note.
The rest of it is a passing blur; the next thing he knows he’s inside again, his finger pressing the numbers one by one, morning’s tepid dirt scattered across his desk. He waits quite nervously as the rings go on and disregards everything else, even the atmosphere and the place he belongs.
Then he hears her hello, body freezing over and throat suddenly dry.
[Hello?] She says again, sounding a little weary, melancholy. [Is anybody there?]
His rather soft tone gathers at its best but somehow still breaks. “It’s Kureno.”
The End.
Comments & concrit will be appreciated. Thank you for reading! (:
