"So, what's the problem around here?" Kojiro asked, striding purposefully into the audience chamber of Chirin's royal palace. The young merchant hated the way people were always calling him to deal with local disputes between the common folk and the nobility. He didn't want the reputation that the revolution had earned him. Just because he'd done the right thing once or twice didn't mean he was signing up for a lifetime commitment to mediate for every disgruntled citizen of Rihaku.
He stopped and squinted curiously when he realized that the only people present in the room were the queen, Millana Ritterhern, and the prime minister, Rimzan Crimsonshaft. This didn't appear much like the usual situation he was asked to deal with. Where were the flustered nobles? The dirty peasants? The frustrated guardsmen?
"It's like this," Millana began, either ignoring or not noticing Kojiro's confusion, "I don't want to be queen anymore. It's a pain. I'm not cut out for it. I want to live my own life and do what I want. But Rimzan says I have to stay queen."
"If Millana abdicates, we'll have to search out a new monarch from one of the distant branches of the family," Rimzan worried.
"But I want to dissolve the monarchy!" the girl insisted. "You're better than a king, Rimzan! You can run the country all by yourself!"
"You're too young to make a decision like that," the prime minister insisted. "And then I'll only face the same charges that I did before! They'll say I forced you to step down, just like they said I manipulated Thomas!"
Kojiro put a hand to his forehead. What did they call him here for? What did the queen and her prime minister think a spice merchant could do to solve their problems? He had resisted taking a government post after the war for a reason, after all. "...Uh, you two? Have you changed your minds? Should I go?"
"No!" the pair shouted at him simultaneously.
"You're close to Rimzan. You must make him see reason!" Millana insisted.
"You were once young and rash like Millana. Tell her to be patient!" Rimzan scowled.
Kojiro stamped his foot on the ground. "I am not doing this! Both of you stop whining and arguing and behave like adults! I am not your mom and I am not going to fix this for you!" Honestly! He couldn't believe the people who ran this country sometimes!
"Yes, sir," the both mumbled, thoroughly chastised.
